The substance isolated from apricot kernels by Ernst Krebs senior, and named pangamic acid, was trade-named B-15 in 1943. Most of the subsequent promotion of this substance has been carried out by his son, Ernst Krebs junior, and stepson, P. W. Stacpoole. The claims that pangamic acid is somehow involved in the body's fence and detoxification system are unfounded. Other claims for favourable effects in heart disease, diabetes, schizophrenia, allergies, alcoholism and cancer have not been substantiated. Indeed, there is some evidence that pangamate may actually cause cancer.
