17.3 Health benefits associated with fermented foods/pro-biotics

We know that the bowel contains certain useful bacteria that play an important role in health such as
  ~ assisting with digestion
  ~ inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria
  ~ producing vitamins and other beneficial compounds like short chain fatty acids
Reported (but not proven) potentially beneficial effects of pro-biotics include
  ~ preventing and treating diarrhoea
  ~ stimulating the immune system
  ~ preventing bowel cancer
